We get asked this question a lot and we would probably think the same if we saw another family doing this. The deal is we have a film production company based in Las Vegas and have the flexibility to block out months at a time where we don’t have to work and can just focus on traveling. While we are out and about our business can still function and operate which brings in money. After downsizing our lives and getting rid of the house and all utility bills our overhead became extremely low. A combination of these two things make this lifestyle work for us. If you put a plan into place that works for your lifestyle anything is possible!
This adventure began out of frustration in our lives because of the daily grind. It just couldn’t work anymore so when our backs were against the wall we decided to make a move and try something new. Were we scared? YES! did we know what was going to happen? NO! Were we down to try? HELL YES! Amazing things happen when you try something new! I promise you!
We are a family of five so we have Sandi, Jimi, Nixon, Skylar and Ryder. A lot of people ask if they can join and tag along on the journey and our answer is always YES! If you wanna have some fun let’s do it!
We have lots of gear, we have our professional stuff as well as our favorite travel camera gear. When we are traveling it all comes down to ease because we realized if it becomes a pain in the ass we don’t want to use it. What we have been using most of the time is our GoPro and canon G7 and iPhones. Sony just came out with a new camera, the Sony zv1 that we are excited to use-we will let you know our thoughts on it:). We have an Amazon store where we have kits set up with everything we use if you want to check it out here!
YES YES YES! Without a doubt we would do it even sooner! We know we are doing something right because the kids love it and are extremely happy when we travel. If we sit somewhere too long they’ll start asking where we are going next. It looks like the apples did not fall far from the tree.. There is such a calmness that actually goes along with the craziness when traveling-I know that sounds funny but we find that we are most at peace when exploring. Not knowing what is around the corner keeps you guessing and keeps senses alive. Once you get out of the daily grind and see there is a different way to live life it is extremely difficult to go back. That’s all I can say!
In the beginning when we realized we definitely wanted a change we looked at what steps we needed to take to make that change possible. First, we had to downsize our life which included getting rid of the house and selling most of our belongings, we kept the important stuff and put it in storage. Depending on whether you are going to move into an RV full-time or just hit the road and start traveling around the world you need to decide what you will want to have with you. A lot of people travel with just carry-ons to make it much easier-we can’t seem to pack that light- EVER lol If you stay in Airbnb’s they usually come pretty well stocked and have appliances. Just pack your clothes and buy food!
What will you be doing to make money? If you have a 9-to-5 job, maybe it’s a possibility to work remotely or find a new job where you can work from anywhere in the world. There are so many options these days that make it really possible to make a living while traveling. In our case, we’ve had our film business for a while so we are able to block out time or just hire people to work for us while we are gone. We totally believe where there is a will there is a way- if you want it bad enough you will make it happen. Everyone’s situation is different so you can take advice from here and there and see how it can help you in your own life:)
There are many factors that come into play when choosing this lifestyle, being flexible is definitely a major one for us. We are super easy going to begin with but sometimes you will get hit with a snowball that you didn’t see coming and you need to be able to handle it. There are some unpredictable things that happen when you don’t have the constant of living in a house where everything is pretty much predictable. Like where are we sleeping tonight lol ok maybe not that extreme but sometimes :)
On the flip side, it is so exciting to constantly be on adventures or slowing down a bit- the journey is in your hands, you pick the adventure!
